How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book under NMFC 98590 at Class 100 and choose packaging type “Boxes” in your TMS/BOL, even when cartons are palletized; no density entry is required.
- Pack bands flat in polybags with chipboard or foam to shield hooks/fasteners. Use firm cartons (32–44 ECT) and mark “Do Not Crush” to prevent deformation.
- For leather bands, add a moisture barrier and desiccant; for fabric bands, avoid over-compression to keep shape. Target carton weights under 40–50 lb for safer LTL handling.
- Label cartons “Helmet Bands—Fabric/Leather, Hooks,” include unit counts/SKUs, and apply scannable labels on two sides. Build square, even layers when stretch-wrapping to a pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 delivers predictable LTL pricing and faster quoting with fewer surprise reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous, boxed goods minimize handling restrictions and accessorials, improving transit speed and dock flow.
- Clear item naming and SKU counts support smoother receiving and simpler claims resolution if damage occurs.
- Proper protection for hooks and fastenings cuts damage risk, reducing returns and warranty costs for PPE and uniform suppliers.
