NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use snug corrugated boxes with 2 inches of cushioning around the shell and lens. Wrap auto-darkening cartridges or visors separately to avoid pressure on optics.
  2. For multi-unit packs, add inner cartons or cell dividers so helmets and hand shields can’t contact each other. Keep tools, wire, or abrasives out of the same box.
  3. Palletize upright with no overhang. Strap, stretch-wrap, and use edge boards; cap with a top sheet and mark Fragile and This Side Up to prevent crush on lenses.
  4. On the BOL, describe as “Helmets (Masks) or Hand Shields, welders', in boxes,” declare Class 150, note non-hazardous, and consider cargo insurance for higher-value ADF models.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable billing at fixed Class 150 streamlines quoting, budgeting, and rate negotiations for welding PPE shipments.
  • Accurate “in boxes” packaging reduces reclass risk and surprise carrier fees, keeping landed costs stable.
  • Non-hazardous status speeds paperwork and dock flow, minimizing accessorials tied to special handling.
  • Damage reduction from proper boxing and palletizing lowers returns and warranty claims, protecting margins and delivery timelines.
