How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Quote using NMFC 98840 at fixed Class 100. Provide piece count, total weight, and note “animal hides, boxed” on the BOL for fast carrier acceptance.
  2. Pack hides in heavy-duty corrugated boxes with poly liners and sealed seams to contain moisture and odor. Example: five 75 lb boxes on a 48x40 pallet, 375 lb total.
  3. Palletize with no overhang, use moisture barriers or slip sheets, and secure with banding plus stretch wrap. Mark gross weight on each box for safe handling.
  4. If hides are salted/wet, ensure no free liquid. Confirm any APHIS/USDA paperwork for cross-border moves and add handling notes like “Do Not Double-Stack” if box strength is limited.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: a single, fixed Class 100 eliminates density disputes and reclass fees common with variable commodities.
  • Wider carrier access: non-hazmat status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies tendering across standard LTL networks.
  • Damage mitigation: standardized boxed packaging reduces leakage/odor claims, boosting carrier acceptance and on-time performance.
  • Operational clarity: one NMFC entry for multiple hide types streamlines training, quoting, and procurement for tanneries and leather manufacturers.
