How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote using NMFC 98840 at fixed Class 100. Provide piece count, total weight, and note “animal hides, boxed” on the BOL for fast carrier acceptance.
- Pack hides in heavy-duty corrugated boxes with poly liners and sealed seams to contain moisture and odor. Example: five 75 lb boxes on a 48x40 pallet, 375 lb total.
- Palletize with no overhang, use moisture barriers or slip sheets, and secure with banding plus stretch wrap. Mark gross weight on each box for safe handling.
- If hides are salted/wet, ensure no free liquid. Confirm any APHIS/USDA paperwork for cross-border moves and add handling notes like “Do Not Double-Stack” if box strength is limited.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a single, fixed Class 100 eliminates density disputes and reclass fees common with variable commodities.
- Wider carrier access: non-hazmat status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies tendering across standard LTL networks.
- Damage mitigation: standardized boxed packaging reduces leakage/odor claims, boosting carrier acceptance and on-time performance.
- Operational clarity: one NMFC entry for multiple hide types streamlines training, quoting, and procurement for tanneries and leather manufacturers.
