How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use leak-resistant packaging: double poly liners inside waxed cartons, plastic drums, or sealed bundles, then stretch-wrap and band to a pallet to meet the “packages” requirement.
- Control brine and odor: drain excess cure brine before tendering, tape seams, add absorbent pads, and consider plastic-lined pallets or drip trays to avoid cleanup fees.
- Document precisely on the BOL: list species and preservation state (e.g., “green salted deer hides”), reference NMFC 98970, Class 85, and include counts and net weight.
- Plan compliance for cross-border moves: confirm USDA/APHIS or CFIA requirements for untreated animal byproducts and attach any sanitary certificates to prevent delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 pricing removes density disputes, reducing reweighs, reclasses, and surprise charges.
- Packaged presentation limits leakage and odor claims, cutting risk of accessorial cleanup or disposal fees.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and improves LTL network availability for faster pickup times.
- Clear NMFC mapping (98970) streamlines quoting and audits, speeding tannery intake and improving lead times.
