How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package raw hides in leak-resistant containers: poly-lined cartons, waxed boxes, or plastic-wrapped bundles in crates. Add absorbent pads and a drip tray on the pallet to contain brine.
- State the condition on the BOL—“green,” “green salted,” or “pickled”—and list packaging as “packages.” Avoid “loose” to prevent disputes and reclassification.
- Stabilize odor and moisture: wrap bundles tightly, stretch-wrap the pallet, and use liners. In hot weather, consider reefer service for freshness and to reduce odor complaints.
- Confirm USDA/APHIS and any import/export permit requirements for skins before pickup, especially for cross-border lanes, to avoid inspections and holds.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating streamlines quoting—no density math—leading to faster, more accurate LTL bids and fewer rebills.
- Leak-proof packaging minimizes cleanup charges, corrosion damage from brine, and claim exposure for co-loaded freight.
- Clear BOL descriptions and compliant packaging speed tender acceptance and reduce carrier refusals or delays at terminals.
- Selecting carriers active in hides backhaul lanes (meatpacking regions) can improve capacity access and sharpen rates.
