How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: Crochet hooks, boxed, NMFC 99900, Class 100 to prevent reclass and speed rating.
- Use inner packs, dividers, or blister cards in each carton so slender hooks don’t pierce packaging; fill voids with kraft paper, not loose peanuts.
- For multi-carton moves, palletize on a 40x48, add corner boards, two straps, and tight stretch wrap; avoid top-load to protect fine tips.
- If mixing with other notions (e.g., knitting needles), list separate line items and packaging; don’t bundle under a single code.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 means predictable rating and faster LTL quotes—no density calculation required.
- Accurate NMFC on the BOL minimizes inspection delays and reclass fees, protecting margins on small craft orders.
- Boxed packaging standard reduces damage on delicate hooks, cutting claims and replacement costs.
- Consistent classification supports vendor compliance and scalable SOPs across retail, ecom, and wholesale channels.
