How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm NMFC item 99930 and identify the correct class (100 or 150) based on how the hoops are constructed and boxed; note if hoops are wood, bamboo, or plastic and if clamps protrude.
- Pack hoops as nested sets in corrugated boxes, bagging each set to prevent scuffs; use dividers or kraft wrap so tension screws don’t gouge adjacent rings.
- Orient clamp screws toward the box interior, add void fill to eliminate rattle, and H-seal with pressure-sensitive tape; choose ECT-32 or ECT-44 cartons depending on total weight.
- On paperwork, describe as “Embroidery Hoops, boxed, NMFC 99930, Class 100–150, non-hazardous,” and include approximate diameters and count per box for smooth receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate class selection (100 or 150) minimizes reclass fees and keeps LTL quotes consistent across carriers.
- Protective boxing and internal separation reduce clamp and rim damage, cutting claim costs and customer returns.
- Non-hazmat status speeds tendering and expands carrier options, often improving transit choices and rates.
- Nesting assortments and right-size cartons improve cube efficiency on pallets, lowering per-unit freight spend for craft distributors and retailers.
