Notes
Note 101687: NOTE-Applies on substances or mixture of substances intended, through physiological action, for accelerating or retarding the rate of growth or maturation, or for otherwise altering the behavior of ornamental or crop plants or the produce thereof, but shall not include substances to the extent that they are intended as plant nutrients, trace elements, nutritional chemicals, plant inoculants or soil amendments.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 101685 on the BOL and describe the commodity clearly: “Plant growth inhibitors/modifiers/regulators, boxed – see Note item 101687.” This signals the exact coverage and reduces reclass disputes.
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes (ECT-32 or better) with inner containers secured. For powders, line cartons to contain dust; for liquid concentrates, add dividers and absorbent pads to prevent seepage.
- Palletize with no overhang on a 48×40 pallet, apply corner boards, and wrap at least three times. Mark “This Side Up” for liquid units and add a moisture top sheet for greenhouse or nursery deliveries.
- Document non-hazardous status and include lot/sku and temperature handling notes if relevant to product stability. Example: 4 x 1-gal bottles per box, 12 boxes per pallet, Class 65.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 simplifies quoting and typically yields lower LTL rates than higher classes, improving landed cost for ag retailers and greenhouse suppliers.
- No density requirement reduces reweigh/reclass fees and speeds dock processing, especially helpful for mixed pallets of different formulations.
- Boxed packaging is widely accepted by carriers, lowering damage risk and accessorials related to special handling or containment.
- Clear linkage to Note item 101687 tightens product fit to the NMFC language, minimizing billing disputes and accelerating claims resolution if needed.
