Notes

Note 101726: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the product is non-regulated under DOT: check the SDS and ensure no UN number or hazard class applies. If labeled as flammable ink (e.g., UN1210), do not use 101725.
  2. Calculate density for each handling unit and apply Item 170. Example: a 48 lb box measuring 18 x 18 x 16 in cubes to ~11 lb/ft³; use the matching density break for class.
  3. Package to prevent leaks and dust: seal primary containers, line boxes with poly, add absorbent for liquids, and bag toner or optical photo cartridges to avoid powder release.
  4. Document on the BOL: NMFC 101725 Ink Materials, density-based. List piece count and packaging (boxes, drums, pails, IBCs) and note Non-Hazardous to avoid hazmat fees.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Avoid hazmat surcharges and carrier restrictions since these inks and additives are not DOT-regulated for labels or placards.
  • Lower freight spend by improving density: consolidate containers, reduce headspace, or use smaller boxes to achieve a better density break under Item 170.
  • Simplify compliance across a broad mix—bases, coatings, driers, extenders, plasticizers, solvents, varnishes, and toner—using one NMFC reference to cut reclass risk.
  • Faster dock processing and fewer re-bills with clear SDS evidence and precise density data on each shipment.
