How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and tender under NMFC 103750 at Class 70; density and dimensional breakouts are not required for this listing.
- Boxed product: line cartons with poly bags to contain mica/insulating dust, add dividers so iron/brass edges don’t abrade, and cushion voids to prevent chipping.
- Drummed product: use drum liners, tight-fitting lids, and pallet-band each drum with two straps; add anti-slip mats and avoid overhang for terminal handling.
- On the BOL, state “Insulating joints—iron/brass/mica,” list package type and count (boxes or drums), include the NMFC and Class 70, and mark as non-hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and helps negotiate consistent LTL freight quotes.
- Lower claim risk: packaging practices protect brittle mica and composite layers, reducing damage write-offs and reships.
- Faster carrier acceptance: non-hazardous, clearly classified freight speeds pickup, dock processing, and linehaul tendering.
- Clean documentation prevents reclass: listing NMFC 103750 and proper packaging type minimizes surprise fees and dispute time.
