How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare the shipment as hazardous on the BOL, attach the SDS, and note “iron sponge, not spent” to distinguish it from spent material with higher risk.
- Use tight-sealed boxes or rated drums; line packages with poly to keep media dry, then palletize, band, and stretch-wrap to prevent sift-out and moisture exposure.
- Book with hazmat-certified LTL carriers, provide a 24/7 emergency contact, and add Keep Dry labels; avoid overhang and confirm stackability only if packaging is rated.
- Example: Four 55-gal drums of unused iron sponge—strap each drum to its own pallet, add corner boards, wrap securely, and rate as Class 50 on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating streamlines quoting and reduces reclass disputes, keeping accessorial costs in check.
- Dense commodity in compact boxes or drums yields favorable cost per pound versus lighter, bulkier alternatives.
- Proper hazmat documentation and moisture control prevent service delays, fines, and rejected loads.
- Standardized packaging (boxes/drums) accelerates dock handling and improves claim outcomes by limiting spill and contamination risk.
