How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle grating by matching size and thickness, then band tightly with steel strapping and corner/edge protectors on 4x4 dunnage—no overhang. Example: 36"×120" panels stacked three-high on a 48"×96" skid.
- Label the bundle with total weight and center of gravity. Ensure forklift access under the runners and pre-arrange liftgate or jobsite delivery if sidewalks are inaccessible to docks.
- Protect finishes: place slip sheets between galvanized faces, cap sharp edges, and wrap high-contact points to prevent chafing during cross-dock handling.
- Use fixed rating details on paperwork: “Area/Sidewalk Grating, Iron or Steel — NMFC 104140, Class 50.” No density calculation is required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk, keeping invoices predictable for project bids and takeoffs.
- Dense steel grating often earns better LTL base rates; controlling length under 96 inches helps avoid overlength surcharge exposure.
- Properly banded and palletized bundles cut OS&D claims and speed cross-dock transfers, lowering indirect costs from delays and replacements.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and lanes, improving service flexibility for time-sensitive jobsite deliveries.
