How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL: Armor, NOI, iron or steel — NMFC 104160, Class 70; reference item 104162 note if a carrier asks for clarification.
- Palletize or crate heavy armor plates using thick skids, 4-way entry, cross-blocking, and steel or poly banding; add edge guards and prevent any overhang.
- Plan handling early: arrange dock or forklift; liftgates are rarely suitable. For pieces 8 ft or longer, confirm overlength surcharges or request flatbed pickup.
- Document counts and weights precisely (per piece and total). Mark centers of gravity on crates to help safe handling and reduce claim risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
