How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 104240 and Class 65 on the bill of lading. Describe the pieces clearly (e.g., steel tie chairs/spacers in packages) and include package count.
- Pack in cartons or banded bundles inside sturdy boxes or crates. Use edge guards, cap sharp steel ends, and stretch-wrap to a 48x40 pallet to prevent punctures.
- Keep screed chairs, tie chairs, and spacers separated by SKU to avoid miscounts. Do not mix with rebar or wire mesh that ship under different NMFCs.
- Set conservative stack heights and mark Do Not Top Load for thin spacers. For jobsite drops, request liftgate and limited-access service to avoid delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 delivers predictable LTL rates and eliminates density surprises for bulk hardware shipments.
- Correct packaging and clear NMFC reduce reclass fees, claims for lost loose parts, and handling damages.
- Fast quoting for distributors, precast plants, and contractors thanks to a single, simple classification in packages.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and enables consolidation with other iron or steel hardware on the same pallet.
