How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 104300 and Class 50 on the BOL; carriers expect bundled iron or steel bars secured with steel strapping and corner protectors.
- Bundle uniform lengths tightly to prevent telescoping; add dunnage between layers so forklifts can pick up without deforming the bottom bars.
- Keep bundles within standard LTL lengths or flag overlength (e.g., 12–20 ft) to avoid accessorials; consider cutting to shorter sticks when feasible.
- Protect surfaces from flash rust with VCI wrap or tarps if shipping open-deck; label weight, piece count, and center of gravity on each bundle.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 50—no density breakups or surprise reclassifications.
- Faster tendering and quoting since the commodity is non-hazardous and classification is straightforward.
- Lower damage risk and fewer claims when bars are tightly banded, making handling safer and turnaround quicker.
- Opportunities to consolidate multiple bundles into one LTL shipment, reducing per-unit freight cost and dock time.
