How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and book as Class 50 and note NMFC 104360 on the BOL; no density rating is required for this item.
- For bars: band into tight bundles with steel strapping, add wood runners for fork access, and cap bundle ends to prevent shift or puncture.
- For sheet or tin plate: stack on skids with slip sheets, edge protectors, and corner guards; band securely and wrap or use VCI paper to limit moisture and rust.
- Prevent overhang and identify center of gravity; mark “Do Not Top Load” on thin sheet packs and block with dunnage or anti-skid mats during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing from a fixed Class 50 means simpler budgeting and fewer rating surprises.
- Lower reclass and inspection risk by using NMFC 104360 and proper bundle or skid packaging.
- Faster dock turns: forklift-friendly runners and protected edges reduce handling time and damage claims.
- Better consolidation options—bar bundles and sheet skids cube efficiently, improving LTL rates and per‑unit freight cost.
