How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and tender at Class 50 and cite NMFC 104400 Structural Bases on the BOL; no density detail needed for rating.
- Unitize heavy, flat bases on solid pallets or skids; band through bolt holes, add edge protectors and top dunnage, then wrap to prevent plate shift.
- For oversized base plates or frames, mark center of gravity and keep lift points clear; confirm forklift tine spacing or request a spreader bar when needed.
- If shipping with small hardware, segregate bases in a dedicated crate or pallet to prevent loss and preserve the correct classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 often secures lower LTL rates for dense steel bases, reducing total transportation costs versus higher-class items.
- Non-density, simple item entry minimizes reclass exposure and unexpected adjustments, improving quote accuracy and billing predictability.
- Rugged, stackable packaging options speed dock handling and can cut accessorial risks like rework, delays, or extra labor.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier availability and simplifies routing for construction projects and machinery installations.
