Notes
Note 104442: NOTE-Applies on copper-clad iron or steel billets not less than 1 1/2 inches square and weighing not less than 100 pounds each, such as are used for the manufacture of copper-clad bars, rods or wire.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm product fit: iron or steel billets with a copper cladding layer; do not classify solid copper bar or plain steel billets under this item.
- Reference Note, item 104442 on the BOL and invoices to show scope and avoid reclass; include NMFC 104440 and accurate NMFC description wording.
- Bundle billets by uniform length with steel strapping, edge protectors, and hardwood dunnage to protect the copper surface and allow safe forklift handling.
- Quote and book at Class 60 without density calculations; provide piece count, bundle length, and total weight to help carriers plan loading and minimize accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 60 pricing streamlines LTL rate shopping and reduces reclass fees tied to density disputes.
- Clear documentation citing NMFC 104440 and the note item cuts inspection delays and keeps freight moving on schedule.
- Surface protection for the copper cladding lowers damage claims on higher‑value billets and preserves resale quality.
- Consistent bundle sizes and pallet-ready dunnage improve handling efficiency, enabling better consolidation and fewer special handling charges.
