How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 104600 on the BOL: “Braces, Bracing, Brackets or Forms, NOI, structural, fabricated from material 3/16 inch or thicker, Class 50.”
- Bundle heavy steel pieces with metal banding on wood skids or pallets; add edge guards and cap sharp corners to protect freight and handlers.
- Keep lengths uniform when possible and block/brace to prevent roll or slide. Mark center of gravity and avoid pallet overhang to reduce damage.
- Do not mix thinner gauges (<3/16 in) in the same NMFC line. Separate SKUs by thickness and note material (iron or steel) for receiving accuracy.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower costs with fixed Class 50 for heavy fabricated steel, avoiding density-based reclass charges and surprise rate hikes.
- Simplified quoting and routing: one classification covers braces, bracing, brackets, or forms at 3/16 in+, even across mixed structural SKUs.
- Fewer inspection disputes thanks to a clear NOI description and consistent class, saving admin time and reducing delays.
- Stronger packaging standards (bundling, edge protection) reduce claims and project downtime for construction and industrial installs.
