How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Quote and book as NMFC 104680 at Class 65. This item is not density-based, so you won’t need a density calculation—select packaging as boxes.
  2. Prep the parts: clean and dry the carbonizing pots to prevent oil drips, secure lids or plugs, and cushion sharp edges. Use cardboard layers or foam to avoid metal-on-metal abrasion inside the box.
  3. Box and block correctly: place each pot or set of small boxes in a heavy-duty corrugated or wood box with internal bracing. Add a pallet-style skid under the box when weight is high, then band and stretch-wrap; mark HEAVY where appropriate.
  4. Document clearly: list piece count, actual weight per box, and a simple description such as “carbonizing boxes or pots, iron or steel—boxed.” Photos of the packed box help carriers and reduce reclass risk.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating: fixed Class 65 simplifies quoting and budgeting—no density math or unexpected reclass charges.
  • Carrier-friendly: boxed, non-hazardous steel containers are easier to handle, broadening carrier options and supporting better LTL rates.
  • Damage reduction: proper blocking inside the box limits scuffing and impact, cutting OS&D claims and downtime for heat-treat operations.
  • Faster operations: straightforward NMFC mapping streamlines tendering and accelerates dock throughput for foundries and heat-treat shops.
