How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose sturdy corrugated boxes for small quantities; use framed plywood or lumber crates for bulk iron/steel shells to prevent flange nicks or distortion.
- Line interiors with VCI paper or oil-resistant wrap and add partitioned dunnage so each case or shell is isolated from abrasion and surface rust.
- Palletize on 48x40 when possible, band and stretch-wrap, and label NMFC 104690, Class 70 on two sides and the top for fast dock check-in.
- Request LTL quotes with accurate piece count, total weight, and stackability notes; class is fixed at 70, so avoid reweigh/reclass by specifying packaging type (boxes or crates).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable spend: fixed Class 70 eliminates density swings, helping standardize rates for repeat shipments of seal housings.
- Lower damage costs: boxed or crated shells resist deformation and scuffing, reducing replacements and warranty returns.
- Quicker handling: clear NMFC labeling and uniform pallets shorten receiving time and curtail detention or rework charges.
- Flexible consolidation: non-hazardous steel parts ship with other components on the same pallet without hazmat fees.
