How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack small steel clips in sturdy, double-wall cartons with inner bags or dividers so edges don’t chafe through and parts don’t scatter in transit.
- Limit each package to manageable weights (e.g., 25–50 lb) and seal with reinforced tape; unitize multiple cartons with stretch wrap for safer LTL handling.
- Label clearly: “Steel reinforcement clips — concrete/plaster — NMFC 104870, Class 65,” and include piece counts and net/gross weights to speed carrier inspections.
- For jobsite deliveries, request liftgate or appointment service and avoid loose pieces; bundle cartons on a skid when volume is high to reduce loss risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 65 rating helps control LTL spend compared to higher-class hardware items.
- Non-hazardous commodity broadens carrier options and reduces accessorial complexity and paperwork.
- Proper packaging minimizes reclass and OS&D claims, preventing chargebacks and delivery delays.
- Carton consolidation and clear labeling streamline dock handling, cutting dwell time and accessorials.
