How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 104890 and Class 50 on the BOL; this item ships by fixed class with no density calculation needed.
- Bundle columns with steel banding over wood dunnage, cap open ends, and create 4-way forklift entry. Example: three 10–12 ft posts on 4x4 skids with bands every 4 ft.
- Protect surfaces and edges: use corner protectors under bands, anti-slip dunnage, and mark center of gravity so forklift ops avoid tipping and denting.
- Plan for length limits: confirm carrier overlength thresholds (often 8–12 ft) and add the accessorial, or split into shorter bundled packs to avoid surcharge.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at Class 50 reduces reclass disputes and shortens quote cycles.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and paperwork, speeding tender and transit.
- Proper bundling lowers handling touchpoints, cutting damage risk and claims costs for long steel members.
- Accurate accessorial planning (overlength, liftgate, crane/forklift) prevents surprise charges and improves delivered cost per column.
