How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the cage matches the NMFC spec: OD not over 15 in, vertical bars at least 1 in thick, welded to spiral/hoops at least 7/16 in.
- Rate and book at Class 65 under NMFC 104930; provide overall length and outside diameter for each bundle—density is not required.
- Bundle cages on timber bunks or cradles, band tightly, and block/brace to prevent rolling; mark OD and length clearly on tags and BOL.
- Select carriers equipped for long steel freight; request side-load or spreader bar handling when lengths run 20–40 ft or more.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 yields predictable LTL pricing and reduces reclass risk for steel reinforcement cages.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Dimension-based rating speeds quoting—no scale tickets or density calculations needed.
- Proper bundling and blocking minimize damage and claims, lowering total delivered cost on pile cage projects.
