How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the commodity as iron/steel furring channels or wall studs (not ceiling suspension grids); print NMFC 105380 and Class 50 on the BOL.
- For packages: band studs or channels into tight bundles with steel/poly strapping, add edge protectors, and rest on wood saddles or a pallet; e.g., 20 pcs x 12 ft, strapped in three places.
- For loose lengths: load straight, block and brace with chocks, cap sharp ends, and keep overhang minimal; request long‑freight handling with your carrier.
- Measure the longest piece; flag anything over 8–12 ft to plan for over‑length fees and choose carriers equipped for long LTL freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 for rugged steel profiles delivers lower base rates than higher classes.
- Item‑specific rating eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass charges and invoice disputes.
- Stable, banded bundles speed cross‑dock handling and cut damage claims for long lengths.
- Clear separation from ceiling grid systems prevents miscoding, protecting margins and compliance.
