How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Rate and book at Class 50—this item is a fixed-class steel product, so density data isn’t required on the BOL.
  2. Bundle W-beams tightly with steel banding, add wood runners for forklift access, and use corner protectors to shield sharp edges and straps.
  3. Note actual piece lengths on the BOL; most rails are 12–13 ft and can trigger overlength fees. Confirm carrier limits before pickup.
  4. Palletize woven wire sections and any posts shipped with the rails, keep hardware bagged and banded to the bundle, and label each unit with piece count and total weight.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Low Class 50 pricing helps control LTL costs on heavy steel barrier shipments.
  • Proper bundling and palletization reduce handling time and claim risk, keeping roadside projects on schedule.
  • Clear length disclosure avoids surprise long-freight charges and reclassifications.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies documentation.
