How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Hangers or Stirrups, joist, steel,” include NMFC 105520 and Class 50 on the BOL to prevent reclass fees.
- Pack small galvanized hangers in rugged cartons with inner bags or dividers so flanges don’t interlock; then band cartons to a 40x48 pallet.
- Orient sharp edges inward, add corner boards and a top sheet, and stretch wrap tightly to limit abrasion and loss during LTL cross-docks.
- For bulk bundles, use steel strapping and slip sheets; keep bundle length within the pallet footprint to avoid overlength accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 delivers predictable LTL quotes for dense metal hardware, improving budget accuracy.
- No density calculation reduces inspections, reclassifications, and post-shipment billing corrections.
- Durable iron or steel parts have lower damage risk, cutting claims and reship costs for construction supply.
- Palletized multi-pack options consolidate SKUs, lowering per-unit freight and speeding dock turns.
