How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Quote and book as NMFC 105540, Class 50, and note “iron or steel hoops in packages” on the BOL to avoid reclass delays.
  2. Nest hoops flat into tight bundles, strap across the diameter and around the circumference, add edge protectors, then stretch-wrap to prevent splaying or rolling. Example: 36 in OD hoops, 12 in stack on a 48x40 pallet with four-way banding.
  3. Mount bundles on sturdy pallets or skids with chocks or blocking so rings cannot move during cross-dock handling; no overhang beyond the pallet footprint.
  4. Protect bare steel from moisture using VCI paper or film, add a top cover sheet, and provide OD, bundle height, piece count, and pallet dims when requesting rates.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 50 rating keeps LTL rates low for dense metal rings, improving landed cost on repeat shipments.
  • Properly declared “in packages” prevents reclass/rebill exposure and speeds carrier acceptance.
  • Secure, palletized bundles cut damage risk from rolling rings and reduce handling time at terminals.
  • Non-hazardous commodity status broadens carrier options and simplifies routing and scheduling.
