How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack inserts in heavy-wall cartons, pails, or kegs with dividers; bag in 25–50 piece counts to curb abrasion and protect threads with caps.
- Palletize by size and heat/lot; keep the center of gravity low, band with steel strap and edge protectors, and wrap tight. Example: eight 40 lb cartons on a 40x48 pallet under 36 in.
- Use precise paperwork: list “NMFC 105560, structural steel inserts, Class 50.” Avoid describing as rebar or miscellaneous fasteners to prevent reclassification.
- When mixing with anchor bolts or plates, segregate SKUs and label each carton; place small boxes in a crate or gaylord to stop loss during handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable, low rating at Class 50 helps secure competitive LTL rates versus higher hardware classes.
- Reduced reclass and inspection fees by citing the exact NMFC and the correct commodity description.
- Lower damage and shortage risk via unitized, banded pallets and bagged piece counts—fewer jobsite delays.
- Faster quoting and routing since class is fixed; only weights and dimensions affect price, not density.
