How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use double-wall cartons with rigid partitions or foam end caps to immobilize each insert; add VCI wrap or oil-resistant liners to control rust and residue.
  2. Keep carton weights manageable (ideally ≤ 75 lb). Mark HEAVY over 50 lb and note piece count and gross weight on the BOL as “NMFC 105550, Class 60.”
  3. Palletize cartons on 48x40 pallets with zero overhang; brick-stack, add corner boards, then stretch-wrap 3–5 revolutions and strap. Top-sheet to protect from dust and moisture.
  4. Castings can chip: avoid loose fill and mixed layers with harder parts. Use separators between tiers and photo-document packaging before pickup to support claims.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 60 eliminates density math and reclass risks, speeding quotes and approvals.
  • Boxed requirement aligns with the tariff language, reducing repack fees and OS&D exposure.
  • Standard iron/steel commodity improves carrier acceptance and unlocks better contract lane rates.
  • Lower damage and corrosion translate to fewer scrapped inserts and steadier engine build schedules.
