How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize the cast iron kettle and block it with cribbing so the body cannot shift; band securely and add edge protection to prevent strap bite on the rim.
- If the kettle has a spout, lid, or legs, secure each piece individually with bolts or cushioning, then stretch wrap and band to the base to avoid impact cracks.
- Mark the center of gravity and forklift entry points; keep tines wide and lift from beneath the pallet to avoid stressing cast iron lugs or handles.
- Write “Cast Iron Melting/Holding Kettle – not asphalt/tar” with NMFC 105590 and Class 55 on the BOL to prevent reclass and inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 simplifies quotes across carriers and reduces surprises tied to density changes.
- Dense cast iron construction earns lower LTL rates compared to lighter, bulkier equipment classes.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines booking and avoids hazmat surcharges or extra documentation.
- Clear NMFC labeling minimizes reclass fees, inspection holds, and damage claims from mishandling.
