How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes rated for the weight; line with a poly bag or VCI paper so loose nails or spikes can’t punch through corners.
- Palletize heavy cartons tight and low: interlock stacks, add edge protectors, and band or stretch-wrap to prevent shifting during LTL handling.
- Note finish and form on the BOL (plain, galvanized, tinned, brass/bronze/copper coated) and list count of boxes plus total weight for quick check-in.
- Control moisture—especially for plain steel—by sealing cartons and adding desiccants; galvanized or tinned coatings help, but condensation can still stain packaging.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 pricing keeps dense nail shipments cost-efficient, lowering per-pound LTL rates on full pallets of hardware.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies tendering and reduces administrative time—no hazmat docs, surcharges, or special handling rules.
- Uniform coverage across multiple coatings streamlines quoting and purchasing, avoiding reclass risks when inventory mixes finishes.
- Box-friendly classification helps consolidate small cartons into unitized pallets, cutting damage claims and minimizing OS&D disputes.
