How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Rate and book as NMFC 105890, Class 50; select boxes as packaging. Example: 10 boxes at 60 lb each, 1 pallet, total 600 lb.
- Pack for abrasion: double- or triple-wall boxes with a 6 mil poly liner to contain fines. Use cornerboards and 2–3 straps per pallet to prevent burst.
- Control moisture and spill risk. Add desiccant in each box, tape seams, and label ‘Grinding Pebbles—Iron/Steel’ so carriers avoid reclassifying as scrap.
- Plan handling for high density. Keep center of gravity low, avoid overhang on a 48x40 pallet, limit stack height, and flag cartons over 50 lb as Heavy.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 yields competitive LTL rates for dense media and reduces surprise reclass charges.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and opens more carrier options, speeding pickups to mills and finishing shops.
- Predictable boxing improves cube utilization and trailer loading, lowering per-pound cost on repeat lanes.
- Clear NMFC mapping simplifies quoting and billing, cutting admin time and dispute risk for abrasives suppliers and foundries.
