How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List “NMFC 105900, Class 50” on the BOL; density isn’t needed for rating, but include piece count and bundle weights for safe handling.
- Band pigs into tight bundles with steel strapping and edge protectors; add hardwood dunnage or 4‑way skids for forklift access and floor protection.
- Plan for heavy lifts: verify forklift or crane capacity, avoid liftgate requests, and mark no‑stack if surfaces are uneven or ingots are irregular.
- Block and brace to stop shift, keep the center of gravity low and centered, and flag sharp edges so carriers use sleeves or edge guards.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low Class 50 on dense pig iron often yields better LTL base rates, improving cost per pound on recurring shipments.
- Non-hazardous material avoids hazmat forms and surcharges, speeding tendering and reducing administrative overhead.
- Accurate NMFC 105900 usage cuts reclass and rebill risk, protecting margins and accelerating billing cycles.
- Forklift-ready bundling and proper dunnage minimize special handling and detention charges while reducing damage claims.
