How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this Class 70 rating when shipping crystallized, embossed, enameled, japanned, marbleized, or sensitized iron/steel plates, sheets, or strips.
- Package in closed boxes or in crates lined with fiberboard; for wrapped bundles, apply metal strapping with edge protectors and skid them for forklift access.
- Protect finished faces with interleaving paper or film and corner guards; keep bundles flat to prevent edge curl and surface scuffing during LTL handling.
- Quote confidently without density math—the item is a fixed NMFC class; just verify packaging matches the rule to avoid reclass or inspection fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs from a consistent Class 70 rating—fewer surprises versus density-based items.
- Reduced damage claims by using lined crates or properly strapped bundles that shield decorative finishes.
- Faster rating and booking since no dims/density are required, streamlining sales and dispatch workflows.
- Broader carrier acceptance for standard boxes/crates, improving lanes and transit times for appliance, signage, and architectural metal projects.
