How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. State on the BOL: “Plate/Sheet/Strip, gold plated, wrapped bundles, securely metal‑strapped — NMFC 106230 (see Note 106722), Class 150.”
  2. Bundle parts tightly with steel banding in both directions and use edge protectors; wrap the stack (paper, film, or VCI) to keep surfaces clean and tarnish-free.
  3. Create safe fork entry: place dunnage or a skid under the bundle so forklifts lift from below without scraping the plated edges.
  4. Because the class is fixed, you don’t need a density calculation, but still record exact piece count, bundle size, and weight for accurate LTL quotes.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 150 simplifies rating and TMS setup, cutting quote time and reducing reclass disputes.
  • Packaging to the NMFC wording (wrapped and securely metal‑strapped) protects the class and helps avoid carrier upcharges.
  • Surface-safe wrapping and edge protection reduce finish damage and claim risk on higher-value plated material.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and minimizes paperwork, helping keep transit times predictable.
