How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 106280 on the BOL and describe as structural steel plates, NOI to prevent reclass.
- Bundle plates with wood dunnage and steel banding; add edge protectors and use skids that allow safe forklift entry.
- Measure total footprint and length; long or oversized bundles can trigger overlength charges—confirm carrier thresholds (often 8–12 ft).
- For heavy bundles, schedule dock-to-dock LTL without liftgate and block/bracing to prevent sliding during transfers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 streamlines quoting and avoids density disputes.
- Dense steel plates typically secure more favorable LTL rates.
- Non-hazardous status reduces paperwork and speeds tendering.
- Clear packaging norms (bundles/skids) cut handling time and damage risk.
