How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Band rebar in uniform bundles with steel strapping and wood dunnage; cap sharp ends. Example: 20-ft #4 bars in 2,000 lb bundles with two belly bands and two chokers.
  2. Palletize wire mesh or metal lath flat; add edge protectors and stretch wrap to prevent abrasion. Crate thin-gauge lath when shipping mixed freight to avoid bent sheets.
  3. Call out overlength and handling needs on the BOL (e.g., 14–20 ft sticks, long forks, no liftgate). Overlength can trigger accessorials—plan for side-load or flatbed when needed.
  4. Quote with specifics: iron/steel type, galvanized or plain, piece and bundle counts, total weight, and dims of the largest unit. Note non-hazardous status to speed approvals.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate packaging and item detail reduce reclass and reweigh fees tied to misidentified rebar, mesh, or lath.
  • Tighter bands and edge protection cut damage risk on lath and welded wire reinforcement, lowering claim exposure.
  • Uniform bundles and palletized sheets move faster across docks, shortening dwell time and limiting handling charges.
  • Managing stick length (cut-to-length where feasible or choosing flatbed) avoids overlength surcharges and stabilizes rates.
