How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Band rebar in uniform bundles with steel strapping and wood dunnage; cap sharp ends. Example: 20-ft #4 bars in 2,000 lb bundles with two belly bands and two chokers.
- Palletize wire mesh or metal lath flat; add edge protectors and stretch wrap to prevent abrasion. Crate thin-gauge lath when shipping mixed freight to avoid bent sheets.
- Call out overlength and handling needs on the BOL (e.g., 14–20 ft sticks, long forks, no liftgate). Overlength can trigger accessorials—plan for side-load or flatbed when needed.
- Quote with specifics: iron/steel type, galvanized or plain, piece and bundle counts, total weight, and dims of the largest unit. Note non-hazardous status to speed approvals.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate packaging and item detail reduce reclass and reweigh fees tied to misidentified rebar, mesh, or lath.
- Tighter bands and edge protection cut damage risk on lath and welded wire reinforcement, lowering claim exposure.
- Uniform bundles and palletized sheets move faster across docks, shortening dwell time and limiting handling charges.
- Managing stick length (cut-to-length where feasible or choosing flatbed) avoids overlength surcharges and stabilizes rates.
