How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Nest spacers, stringers, or stiffeners tightly and band the bundle with steel or PET strapping; add blocking so pieces cannot shift or telescope.
- Palletize long stringers lengthwise with no overhang, apply edge guards on cut ends, and mark lift points to prevent forklift tine damage.
- Use corrosion control for raw steel—VCI wrap or rust-inhibiting paper—and place slip sheets to keep oil or scale off adjacent freight.
- Print NMFC 106440 and “Class 50 – Nested Iron/Steel” on the BOL and pallet labels to avoid reclass fees during LTL inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower costs: Class 50 on nested steel parts delivers favorable LTL rates for heavy civil and landscape supply shipments.
- Faster quoting: simple, fixed classification means no density calculations, reducing pricing time and reclass risk.
- Better cube efficiency: nesting increases piece count per pallet and helps minimize accessorials tied to oversized freight.
- Fewer claims and delays: edge protection and rust prevention keep parts job-ready and limit replacement or reship expenses.
