Notes
Note 106462: NOTE-Applies only on rings produced by rolling to ring shape, which rings, of themselves, do not constitute fastening, retaining or packing devices.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select Packages as the packaging type on the BOL; list ring count, largest OD, and total weight to align with NMFC 106460 and avoid density questions.
- Bundle rings tightly with steel banding and edge protectors; add blocking or a skid so rings cannot roll and machined faces stay protected.
- Moisture-shield sensitive rings using VCI wrap or poly; mark as “Rolled Steel Rings, NOI – Class 70” so dock crews route correctly.
- If a carrier challenges the rating, cite the NMFC note under item 106462 to confirm NOI coverage for packaged steel rings.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 rating reduces reclass fees and stabilizes LTL quotes across carriers.
- Lower handling friction: non-hazardous steel rings move through terminals without special permits, cutting delays and accessorials.
- Fewer damage claims: secure bundling and clear labeling prevent rolling, abrasion, and edge dents—key for OEM and machine shop tolerances.
- Simplified operations: one NMFC for NOI rings streamlines SKU routing for service centers and fabricators, speeding order fulfillment.
