How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item is truly unfinished: rings straight from hammer, press, or rolls that still need turning or planing. Finished or machined rings belong in a different item.
- Package securely: stack rings flat or nested, separate layers with fiberboard or plywood, then band to a pallet using steel strapping and edge protectors. Shrink-wrap to contain loose scale.
- Stop rolling and shifting: use chocks or blocking inside crates, fill voids with dunnage, and avoid vertical orientation that can let rings tip during LTL handling.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Rough steel rings, packaged – NMFC 106470 – Class 50,” including piece count, pallet/crate type, and dimensions for accurate rating and faster check-in.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Leverage low Class 50 pricing to cut LTL costs on heavy, compact steel freight.
- Fixed class (no density breakpoints) streamlines quoting and prevents reclass fees from density disputes.
- Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and reduces compliance overhead versus regulated commodities.
- Proper packaging around this item spec lowers damage risk and claim rates, protecting downstream machining schedules.
