How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle same-size stirrups tightly (e.g., 25–50 per bundle), cap sharp ends, and place bundles in cartons or shrink-wrapped packages before palletizing.
- List the commodity as “Stirrups, concrete or plaster reinforcement, in packages — NMFC 107040, Class 65” on the BOL to avoid reclass from generic terms like rebar.
- Use corner protectors and banding over corrugated pads to prevent strap damage, keeping all packages within the pallet footprint with no overhang.
- Add light moisture protection (VCI paper or poly) for plain steel to curb rust risk, and provide actual weight and pallet dimensions for accurate LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable, non-density rating at Class 65 streamlines pricing and budgeting for fabricated steel hardware.
- Accurate commodity naming and packaged presentation reduce reclass, OS&D claims, and accessorial surprises.
- Faster quoting and tendering since the class is fixed, shortening sales and dispatch cycles.
- Efficient consolidation with other iron or steel items lowers handling touches and improves cubic utilization.
