How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect threads and bores before packing by using caps or thread protectors, then wrap each socket in VCI paper or oil-treated poly to resist corrosion.
- Choose rugged cartons or crate boxes for heavy hardware; add dividers or bag smaller counts so sockets don’t abrade each other in transit.
- Palletize uniformly: keep heavier cartons low, use dense blocking, and apply two to three steel or poly bands plus stretch wrap to prevent load shift.
- Write the BOL line as “Studding Sockets, in packages – NMFC 107080, Class 50” to ensure carriers rate correctly and avoid reclass charges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 50 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and preventing rating disputes.
- Lower LTL spend for heavy metal hardware since Class 50 typically prices more favorably than higher classes.
- Reduced accessorial risk: packaged, non-hazardous parts minimize special handling fees and hazmat surcharges.
- Cleaner audits and faster AP: a single NMFC code for all packaged studding sockets streamlines contracts and TMS rules.
