How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 107180 and Class 70 on the BOL; no density calculation is required for these boxed metal plates.
- Protect the lithographed faces from scuffing: use interleaving paper or film inside each box, and keep sheets flat rather than on edge (e.g., 24x36 printed tinplate with slip sheets).
- Palletize cartons tightly on a 40x48 pallet, add corner guards, and band or stretch-wrap to prevent shifting; mark “Do Not Crush” and “This Side Up” to preserve printed surfaces.
- Control moisture to avoid surface spotting on inks and varnish—line boxes with poly or VCI paper and avoid outdoor staging or damp trailers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single, fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and rating—no density breaks to manage across varied box counts.
- Boxed packaging and flat-stacked pallets cut claim risk for ink rub, edge dings, and coating scratches, protecting print quality.
- Non-hazardous designation reduces paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, speeding tender and pickup.
- Better trailer cube with stackable cartons lowers cost per sheet compared to bulk or loose bundles.
