How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the commodity fits: terne or tin plate, embossed or perforated, packed in boxes to qualify for NMFC 107160 at Class 70.
- Protect sharp edges and finishes with interleaving (paper/VCI), edge guards, and tight-fit corrugated or wood boxes; strap boxed sheets to a pallet and mark Keep Flat.
- List NMFC 107160 and Class 70 on the BOL for quoting and inspection alignment; class is fixed, so density isn’t used for reclass.
- Keep moisture out with desiccants or VCI liners and avoid overstacking; ideal for roofing/restoration terne sheets or perforated tin panels headed to fabrication.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 70 reduces rating disputes and quote variance.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees and paperwork.
- Boxed packaging requirement lowers edge-damage claims, speeding dock turns and limiting rework.
- Accurate NMFC match for embossed/perforated sheets prevents costly reclass, delays, and inspection charges.
