How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package coils or bundles securely to qualify for Class 50—use dense wrap, edge protectors, and at least two steel or poly straps, then palletize for forklift handling.
- Cap or tape sharp wire ends and band edges; add VCI paper or moisture barrier wrap to prevent rust during transit and storage.
- Label each package with coil/bundle count and actual weight; keep package weights uniform to make cross-dock handling faster and reduce damage risk.
- Do not mix hardware (buckles, tools) with ties or wire in the same package; ship accessories separately to avoid confusion and potential reclassification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 simplifies quoting and keeps rates predictable—no density breakpoints or calculators needed.
- “In packages” eligibility reduces reclass risk and accessorials tied to loose, uncontained metal coils.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat fees, cutting total landed cost.
- Palletized, protected bundles lower OS&D claims on sharp-edged steel products, preserving margin and service levels.
