How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 107260 on the BOL and describe as “wall ties/wall bonds, iron or steel, in packages” to ensure a clean Class 50 rating.
- Box or tightly band ties into rigid packages; add edge protectors and shrink-wrap. Palletize cartons to prevent bending while keeping the item classified as packaged.
- Separate by length and finish (e.g., 6 in galvanized vs. 8 in plain). Clearly mark piece counts per package to streamline receiving and avoid disputes.
- Prevent corrosion and damage: keep packages dry, use moisture-resistant wrap for jobsite deliveries, and avoid protruding banding that can snag during LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 keeps base LTL rates low compared with higher-class hardware items.
- Predictable, non-density classification reduces reweigh/reclass fees and accelerates quoting.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and minimizes compliance overhead.
- Straightforward packaging of durable steel ties enables efficient consolidation with other construction hardware for better cube utilization.
