How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List exact weight per handling unit and piece count on the BOL (e.g., 3 pallets at 2,200 lb each). Class 50 applies regardless of density, so precise weight drives pricing.
- Package as heavy-duty crates or banded palletized bundles. Use steel strapping with edge protectors and block/brace to prevent shifting; stretch wrap alone isn’t enough for dense iron/steel.
- Balance load and mark center of gravity on large weights. Maintain forklift entry on two sides and keep within pallet load ratings (often 3,500–4,000 lb unless using reinforced skids).
- Label as “Unmachined Counterweights” and include NMFC 107420 on paperwork. If shapes are irregular, add cribbing/chocks so pieces can’t roll in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low Class 50 means better cost per pound for dense metal, lowering LTL spend on heavy counterweights.
- Predictable quotes with fewer reclass fees: density isn’t required, so you avoid costly billing surprises.
- Stronger packaging standards reduce OS&D risk and downtime, keeping production lines and lift trucks on schedule.
- Non-hazardous designation expands carrier options and speeds tendering, improving lead times and capacity access.
