How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List exact weight per handling unit and piece count on the BOL (e.g., 3 pallets at 2,200 lb each). Class 50 applies regardless of density, so precise weight drives pricing.
  2. Package as heavy-duty crates or banded palletized bundles. Use steel strapping with edge protectors and block/brace to prevent shifting; stretch wrap alone isn’t enough for dense iron/steel.
  3. Balance load and mark center of gravity on large weights. Maintain forklift entry on two sides and keep within pallet load ratings (often 3,500–4,000 lb unless using reinforced skids).
  4. Label as “Unmachined Counterweights” and include NMFC 107420 on paperwork. If shapes are irregular, add cribbing/chocks so pieces can’t roll in transit.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Low Class 50 means better cost per pound for dense metal, lowering LTL spend on heavy counterweights.
  • Predictable quotes with fewer reclass fees: density isn’t required, so you avoid costly billing surprises.
  • Stronger packaging standards reduce OS&D risk and downtime, keeping production lines and lift trucks on schedule.
  • Non-hazardous designation expands carrier options and speeds tendering, improving lead times and capacity access.
