How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select Class 50 for iron or steel sash weights shipped in packages and note NMFC 107440 on the BOL. Record total shipment weight and package count.
- Pack tightly: nest weights with corrugated dividers, wrap, and band bundles to a pallet. Use end caps or edge guards to protect eyelets and prevent rolling.
- Center heavy bundles on a 48x40 pallet and secure with at least two steel or poly bands. Mark “Heavy” and “Do Not Stack” if cartons exceed safe stacking limits.
- Avoid density-based rating—this item is fixed Class 50. Do not list as scrap or generic bars; specify “sash weights, packaged, non-hazardous” for clean inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 50 eliminates density audits and reduces reclass risks that drive up LTL costs.
- Lower claims exposure: proper bundling and blocking prevent rolling and eyelet damage, protecting cast iron or steel finishes.
- Faster quotes and broader carrier acceptance: non-hazardous status removes HazMat surcharges and simplifies booking.
- Operational efficiency: palletized package units speed cross-dock handling and inventory counts, cutting dwell time and accessorials.
