How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm pieces meet 11-gauge or thicker and note the finish (galvanized, plain, or tinned) on the BOL to align with the NOI listing.
- Use heavy-duty corrugated boxes with dense packing or dividers so U-legs cannot puncture the carton; wrap bundles to control abrasion and zinc flake transfer.
- Fill voids and protect edges; label each box with piece count and gauge. For multiple boxes, unitize on a pallet and strap tightly to prevent shift.
- Mark shipment as “U-Shaped Steel Wickets – Class 55.” Keep boxes dry and clean to preserve galvanized/tinned coating and avoid rework at destination.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 rating means no density calculations, enabling fast, predictable LTL quotes and fewer reclass disputes.
- Boxed packaging reduces surface scuffing and coating damage, cutting claim risk and preserving finish quality for downstream assembly.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies tendering and documentation, avoiding hazmat surcharges and speeding dock throughput.
- Clear identification as iron/steel wickets prevents confusion with nails or staples, minimizing inspection delays and reclass fees.
